Crash, boom, uh oh! You Were Just Involved in an auto accident – now what?
Missouri law says you have to buy auto insurance. But it’s one thing many people purchase that they hope they never have to use.
I don’t know about you but I don’t usually go shopping, put something in a closet and hope I never have to see it again.
But, if the unfortunate occurs here are some simple things you should and shouldn’t do.
1. Always call the police (they usually won’t respond to private property, but it never hurts to try). Someone may take full responsibility at the scene of the accident, but after the fact their memory of the accident may change and now they think it’s your fault. Get the details in writing at the scene.
2. Don’t offer to pay for anything, even if you think you are at fault. Let your insurance company handle this.
3. Remain calm, cool and collected – accidents happen – that’s why they are called accidents.
4. Collect and share important information:
- Name
- Address
- Phone Number
- Vehicle Info: Year, Make, Model, VIN Number, and License Plate Number
- Passenger Information
- Any Injuries?
- Type and Extent of Damages
- Insurance Info: Company, Policy Number, Named Insured, and Phone Number
- Witness Info: Name, Address, and Phone Number
- Pictures: Take pictures of the auto accident!
5. If the other party is at fault call their insurance company. They should take care of any damage to you and/or your vehicle. If they are not taking care of you then call your agent or insurance company – if they handle the claim you may be responsible for your deductible.
Auto accidents happen. If you had a crystal ball, guaranteeing you would never be involved in an accident you could justify not buying insurance (or at least buying cheap insurance). But that’s not the world we live in. There are things in life worth pinching pennies over. Insurance isn’t one of those things.
