April showers bring May flowers. And the occasional flooding…Does your Missouri Homeowners Insurance cover flood?
We need the rain. The farmers need the rain.
Still Spring rains in Missouri have a tendency to wreak havoc on homeowners.
We are often asked, “does my homeowners insurance cover flooding?“
It’s a good question.
Unfortunately the answer is no, homeowners insurance does not cover flooding. Flood insurance is a completely separate policy.
Is Water in My Basement Covered?
How did the water get in your basement? Here are a couple of examples…
Backup of Sewer or Floor Drains
If you discover water all over your basement and find out the sewer or floor drains were backed up causing damage, you may be covered – if you purchased the endorsement referred to as Backup of Sewer and Drain on your homeowners policy. The endorsement does not come automatic with your policy. Don’t assume you’re covered for it.
Water is Seeping in My Basement
It had been raining all week. Today was a horrible downpour. When Lucy came home from work she found water in her basement. After investigating the problem further, she learned the water had been seeping in from outside of her home. It wasn’t from the floor drains. The water found its way inside. This is an example of a water issue that homeowners insurance policies do not cover. There isn’t an endorsement available for this type of an outcome.
